Delectable Edibles

Consider adding these new varieties to your production schedule in 2014 for a flavorful boost to sales.

Blueberry Glaze
Blueberry Glaze, the newest addition to the BrazelBerries Shrub collection from Fall Creek Farm & Nursery, has incredibly glossy dark green leaves and compact growth habit. At first glance, it looks almost boxwood-like and easily can be sheared and used in much the same way – except it bears delicious dark blue fruit. As an ornamental beauty, Blueberry Glaze makes an excellent accent in the landscape or simply pruned into a hedge. Due to its compact size, it is perfect for small spaces and stunning in decorative containers to bring color and fruit to patios, decks and balconies. It’s best suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 5-8.

SimplyHerbs Sage

SimplyHerbs Sage from PanAmerican Seed is a multi-seed pellet of Salvia officinalis, a flavorful and aromatic addition to many home-cooked recipes. It finishes 18 to 24 inches tall and spreads 14 to 24 inches wide. It is hardy to USDA Zone 4. Each multi-seed pellet includes 6 to 10 salvia seeds for a uniform, better-looking plant at retail. Days from transplant to harvest: 28. Plants in the new SimplyHerbs line, growers don’t “seed broadcast” or scoop across the soil, and they use less seed than oversow or multisow methods. By direct-sowing the multi-seed pellet, SimplyHerbs produces a healthy, uniform, better-looking plant to show at retail with reduced tangle on the bench.
