In a press release sent out on March 25, Great Lakes Growers, a hydroponic greenhouse grower based in Burton, Ohio, announced its “Great Lakes Growers Express” delivery service. The program, which is taking orders now, is currently available to Ohio residents only. The company plans to expand into neighboring states this summer.
“We’ve been thinking about this for a long time and actually began the process of testing and implementing a salad home delivery service last summer,” owner and CEO John Bonner said, according to the press release. "The tests went extremely well in terms of how the produce held up during delivery, so then it just came down to developing an easy-to-use website and streamlining our process for the incoming orders.”
According to the service’s website, customers must place their orders by the end of the day on Sunday in order to have their greens delivered by UPS by Wednesday of that week. Currently, there are three lettuce packages to pick from: herb-infused, rabbit’s choice and spice it up!; there is also an option to order a variety pack with all three options.
The herb-infused pack comes with six heads of living lettuce and packs of fresh cut dill and cilantro. Rabbit’s choice comes with the eight types of lettuce grown by Great Lakes Growers, while spice it up! includes six heads of lettuce, plus arugula and watercress. Prices for the greens range from $39.99 to $99.99. For $39.99, an order includes one delivery of whichever pack a customer wants. At the $99.99 level, customers can choose between receiving greens every other week or every week.
