FDA to Hold Webinar on Updated ‘Healthy’ Claim

The webinar, scheduled for Feb. 20, from 1-2 p.m. ET, will provide an overview of the recently released final rule to update the definition of the nutrient content claim “healthy” that manufacturers can voluntarily use on food packages.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) will host a stakeholder webinar on Thursday, Feb. 20, from 1-2 p.m. ET, to provide an overview of the recently released final rule to update the definition of the nutrient content claim “healthy” that manufacturers can voluntarily use on food packages.

The updated “healthy” claim provides a quick signal on food package labels to help consumers identify foods that can be the foundation of healthy eating patterns. This action is part of the FDA’s broader commitment to make food a vehicle for health and wellness, reduce diet-related chronic diseases and promote health equity.  

The updated criteria for the “healthy” claim are aligned with current nutrition science, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025 and the updated Nutrition Facts label, which requires the declaration of added sugars. The updated criteria for the “healthy” claim require a product to contain a certain amount of a food group recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and to meet certain limits for saturated fat, sodium and added sugars. 

Companies that choose to use the “healthy” claim can use the new standards starting on Feb. 25 and must follow the updated definition by Feb. 25, 2028.

Registration for the webinar is required. There is an opportunity to submit questions during the registration process. FDA said it will address as many questions as possible during the webinar.
